When someone loses their teeth, they also lose the confidence to smile or speak. Besides, the malocclusion or bite, which generates the tooth loss, could have a negative effect over the eating habits and this could lead to secondary health problems, like malnutrition.

The most common causes for tooth loss could be: Periodontitis, Gingivitis or gum disease, dental fractures due to cavities or any other factor, congenital alterations on the dental development, smoking, and/or diseases present in patients like: diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, etc. Regardless of the nature of the problems related with tooth loss, the Dental Implants can provide a simple and permanent benefit from which the missing dental pieces are restored with proven results.

Immediate Placement with Bone Graft and Membrane

Advanced periodontal disease can lead to severe bone loss in the jaw. Tooth loos is the most common result of bone loss. Bone that is gone in result of periodontal disease can now be regenerated, helping to avert possible tooth loss by creating a strong foundation for teeth. Osseous surgery is first performed and then demineralized bone material is placed in areas where there is noticeable bone loss. This material stimulates your body to regenerate more of your own bone to fill in where bone loss has occurred. In some specific cases of bone loss, a collagen membrane can be placed alone or in conjunction with a bone graft, to aid in the regeneration of bone. These are highly predictable and successful techniques to treat advanced periodontal disease.

    • What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a device made of titanium destined to be the artificial substitute of the root of a missing tooth, and is used to replace from a tooth, up to generalized bone restoration of the entire mouth. Usually, they have the shape of a screw (threaded) and are made of biocompatible materials that don't produce allergic reactions or rejection and allow bone integration (binding to the bone).

This implant is inserted into the jawbone or maxillary by a surgical drilling system which causes less trauma, and will serve as support for the future pieces or crowns to be replaced. By replacing the lost teeth through dental implants most of the alveolar bone is preserved since this is reabsorbed by not receiving any stimulus, and by definitely losing the natural teeth. The implants act as an anchor and can be used to substitute only one tooth, one or two ends of a bridge, of a complete denture or even functioning as a removable denture with one hybrid bar screwed to them. The age is not a problem when it comes to the placement of an implant, but good health and adequate bone structure are required.
For the placement and definite rehabilitation of the dental implants are required two phases, the first phase is the placement of one or more dental implants (surgical phase), and from 4 to 6 months after, the second phase for the placement of the prosthetic or crown over the implants (restorative part) meanwhile you'll be given temporary ones while the healing process finishes.

Another of the multiple choices is the Immediate Implants, but these can only be placed in patients that fulfill certain requirements, and can take around 7 to 10 days to finish all the process. Once the implants are integrated in the maxillary, they work as good as the natural teeth and can chew the food you desire, and talk with full confidence improving also the aesthetics. Taking into consideration all the above, the dental implants or mini dental implants can also be used to support full or partial prosthesis (dentures) greatly improving the chewing function. Another important point to mention is that if a tooth is lost the bone around this area slowly starts to disappear (atrophy) and can change the shape of the jaw. A dental implant placed in that area can actually stimulate bone growth, preventing loss of valuable bone structure. In some patients where there is important bone loss, a bone graft may be necessary before placing a dental implant.
